In 2025, President Donald J. Trump signed an executive order, America by Design—a national mandate to redesign the experience of government itself. To lead it, he turned to entrepreneur and designer Joe Gebbia, and established the National Design Studio—the first team of its kind in the history of the U.S. government. Joe’s promise to the President: assemble the finest talent in the country.

His promise to the nation: transform a vast sea of outdated government websites into a best-in-class consumer experience.

It started where all intrepid and somewhat unreasonable organizations do—in a garage. Joe’s, while it waited for its permanent headquarters on the White House campus.

Folding tables became workstations. Whiteboards covered the walls. Designers and engineers worked shoulder to shoulder long after midnight, beneath the glow of the neon National Design Studio sign. No titles mattered, only the mission.

When the studio moved into the Eisenhower Executive Office Building, steps from the West Wing, it left the garage behind—but not its spirit. The same urgency. The same late nights. And the idea that government must look as good as it works—and work even better than it looks.

People used to enter buildings to access their government—marble lobbies, heavy doors, a country that treated you with respect.

Today that lobby is a website, the only government building most people will ever enter—built like an afterthought. Twenty-nine thousand, fragmented, most unusable on a phone.

National Design Studio gives those services the care the marble once got: clear enough to finish on the first try, fast enough to do in one sitting—so the screen leaves you feeling what the marble once did.
